This multi- platform editor is written in Java. Its CareWare, which means it doesn’t cost any money.
BBEd1t (www.barebones.com/products/bbedit/index.html)
This editor is designed for use on a Mac. BBEdit sells for $179.00. Development and support have been discontinued for BBEd1t Lite, which is free, but it can still he found and legally used. TextWrangler is offered for $49 as a replacement for BBEdit Lite.
EditPlus (www.editplus.com)
This editor is designed for use on a Windows machine. EditPlus is shareware, and the license is $30.

Emacs works with Windows, Linux, and Unix, and it’s free.

vim and gvim (www.vim.org)
These free, enhanced versions of vi can he used with Windows, Linux, Unix, and Mac OS. The gvim editor has a GUI that makes Windows users feel more at home.
